Cocoon Pendant Lamp
[CURATED ANTIQUES]
Cocoon Pendant Lamp — attr. Friedel Wauer for Goldkant Leuchten
This pendant belongs to the parallel German cocoon tradition pioneered by Friedel Wauer for Goldkant Leuchten in Wuppertal. The form — a swelling, lantern-like globe divided into lobed panels by slender metal ribs, gathered at the crown by a brass hub — has an almost botanical quality, somewhere between a seed pod and a paper lantern. Like its Italian counterparts, it is built on a metal wire armature sprayed with synthetic resin, a technique that produces a shade of remarkable lightness, diffusing a warm, amber glow that reveals the fibrous texture of the material from within. Though frequently mistaken for Castiglioni's work, Wauer's designs have a distinctive organic expressiveness entirely their own — and are increasingly recognised as significant objects in their own right.
Recently rewired: solid brass socket and linen cable.
