LEUTH 5
L Ē O H T, from the ancient language: ‘leuhta’ (light), ‘lewk’ (bright)
Candleholder series in grained porcelain, sand, ash, and rock particles, fired at 1280°C in an oxidation kiln.
Deep within the earth, water transforms, sculpts, whispers, and sings, shaping the allures of a hidden landscape—the underground worlds.
‘A single powerful drop of water is enough to create a world and to dissolve the night. To dream of power, all that is needed is a drop imagined in depth. Water thus energized is a seed; it gives life an inexhaustible surge.’ Gaston Bachelard (1942) - Water and Dreams
Johanna Meyer’s world draws on the inner forces that animate matter. Rock and clay are living entities with a will of their own, which the artist accompanies with humility. Through her research and collecting, she studies the strength and unique characteristics of the minerals that make up her world. She draws upon geology, history, and the power of nature to create work imbued with spirituality and philosophy. Her works are the result of a convergence between a desire for abstraction and the construction of a personal narrative that unfolds over time. Johanna Meyer is Brazilian; she lives and works in France, in the Béarn region. She holds a National Diploma in Art from the ESA Pays Basque and a Masters in Ceramics from the ESAD Pyrénées.
