Jérôme Hirson grew up in northern France, surrounded by factories and smokestacks. Working on an assembly line, he experienced the automated motions of his work firsthand for years. Then, by chance, he discovered the work of Dauphine Scalbert, a ceramic artist, and asked her to train him in the craft. Jérôme’s pieces are at once raw and expressive, yet disarming in their delicacy. He eschews all forms of mechanical aids, working solely with hand-building techniques. With poetic flair, he draws on primal gestures to capture a language that is both tender and wild. The autumnal hues of his creations pay homage to the landscapes he has called home, and capture the pulse of a living material. Jérôme Hirson uses clays with a high chamotte content, varying in their iron oxide and manganese content. His pieces are built using coils, then he works them by scraping the clay to add texture, create roughness, and reveal the material’s essence. He applies a single type of transparent glaze—using a ladle, a brush, a sponge, or by hand—which reveals itself differently depending on the clay. He plays with the thickness to achieve matte, glossy, rough, and smooth effects.
