DICHOTOMIA

€6,800.00

[IRIS DROUET]

Woven entirely by hand on an wooden loom, Dichotomia is a large-scale wall piece in pure, undyed wool. The blacks and greys emerge from the natural melanin of the fleece, varying with the breed and age of the sheep. Sardinian wool, carrying a quiet grey-green tone, adds a subtle chromatic depth. The piece is built around a T-shape — a cross drawn in shadow, held within a vast textured landscape. "Strong contrasts that coexist within a somewhat unstructured body", as the artist describes it. A form both anatomical and intimate, connected to the feminine, to the body. A tension held, not resolved.

Iris Drouet explores modernist icons of architecture throughtextile abstraction.Pieces are informed by the primitive sources behind early modernism, the one that took its purity of lines from folk arts, a hidden fact illustrated by the beautiful collection of folk and antique rugs and textiles present in the collections of masters and artists at the Bauhaus in its early years. All the pieces are handwoven by the artist on her wooden looms. From her background in architecture, space and materials dialogue to shape the final piece, handwoven in the atelier. Processes vary according to the very production of a piece : handspun wool, linen or site-specific materials may be involved in its making.
