COCOON PENDANT I
[CURATED ANTIQUES]
A quiet icon of mid-century modernism, the cocoon pendant emerged in the 1960s as one of the era's most poetic lighting objects. Its distinctive silhouette — a flattened ellipse of ribbed resin, gathered at top and bottom by slender brass fittings, was achieved by spraying a synthetic polymer resin over a wire armature, a technique pioneered by Gunther Pfaff and later adopted by manufacturers across Germany and Scandinavia. The result is a shade that seems almost organic: translucent, warm, and softly luminous when lit, diffusing light in a way that no glass or fabric could quite replicate. Suspended on its braided cord, this lamp carries the confident restraint of its decade, functional, sculptural, and entirely at ease with itself.
Recently rewired: solid brass socket and linen cable. Some parts of the lamp are damaged; see photos.
