CALICE III
[PASCALE ZINTZEN]
This series is built around the chalice as its central motif, a highly symbolic vessel. In Christian liturgy, as the vessel containing the consecrated wine, the sacred chalice symbolizes the blood of Christ. The act of gathering and drinking together from the same vessel represents the faith shared by the community. In a more poetic sense (and in French as well), the word “calice” also refers to the calyx of a flower—the outer envelope composed of sepals that protects the bud before it opens. It thus represents the receptacle of life and its beauty, regeneration, and renewal. Going further back, its probable ancestor, the kylix, is a drinking cup with two horizontal handles, central to rituals of communal drinking. With this series, Pascale Zintzen speaks to us of dialogue, of the bond between human beings across the ages, and of the stories we invent when we come together.
Pascale Zintzen is the founder of Oikos Estudio. A multidisciplinary artist, she is based in Barcelona and the Baix Ebre region of Spain, where she lives with her two children and her dog. She expresses herself through various techniques and materials, including ceramics, tapestry, painting, and lime. Her inspiration draws from nature and ancestral objects designed for the home. Pascale creates pieces at the intersection of functional art and sculpture. Her artistic vocabulary is rooted in her background as an archaeologist specializing in domestic ceramics.
